Anxiety is hardwired in our brain as a protective mechanism for getting us out of danger but what exactly happens when we’re anxious? Physiologically, our flight or fight (or freeze) response is triggered by worrying, stress, imagining the worst and so on. This response causes the body to release stress hormones of adrenaline and cortisol getting the body ready to deal with the threat.
Unfortunately most of this fear is unrealistic and unnecessary (after all it’s unlikely we are being chased by that proverbial tiger!), and our modern 24/7 type of lifestyles are a major cause for this constant stress. Sometimes anxiety is a learned behaviour, usually from our parents or those who are our carers.
What does anxiety feel like in the body? Some of the symptoms of anxiety which can be experienced are: Sweating, tension, feeling “on edge”, an increased heart rate, shallow breathing, shakiness, panic attacks (not always), tingling or numbness, nausea, flushes or chills and chest pains.
A little bit of anxiety can have some positives like preparing us for something we need to accomplish and give us a bit of an edge when we need to be focused, however when it becomes out of control, as in Generalised Anxiety Disorder, where people are always anticipating disaster, worrying excessively about health, finances, family and work, this can affect their life in a very negative way. Sometimes even the thought of getting through another day provokes anxiety. There is often the inability to relax and often GAD is accompanied by insomnia or difficulty staying asleep. Depression often goes hand in hand with anxiety disorders and this needs to be treated separately too.
Hypnotherapy and NLP can help identify exactly what sets off an anxiety “attack” and break the pattern or cycle that automatically runs in the brain. Furthermore the session itself is highly relaxing and most clients report feeling relaxed and calm after a session. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and other techniques are also taught to clients to help them self-manage their anxiety as well as self-hypnosis. Hypnotherapy works especially well for anxiety because anxious people tend to have powerful imaginations, it’s their super power, they’ve just been using for negative instead of positive!
The Anxiety & Stress Program is a 3 session package for R1900 (less 10% for online sessions). In person sessions are available in our Hillcrest, (Durban) Clinic.
Tips to manage anxiety:
-
Remember that although you might be feeling some scary feelings, they are not dangerous or harmful and that these bodily reactions are just an exaggeration of your normal physiological reaction to stress.
-
Do not resist the feelings, the old saying “What you Resist Persist” is very true, just gently allow the feeling some space in your body and mind and often after a couple of minutes the feelings will become less intense.
-
If you are familiar with any Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) tap away the anxiety!
-
If you can’t stop your mind from racing do something mundane like counting backwards from 100 in 3’s or again try some EFT. Change the “what if” thoughts to “so what”.
-
Stay present, focus your attention on 3 things you can see, 3 things you can hear, 3 things you can touch, keep repeating this until the intensity of the feelings subside.
